Top 10 Common Delayed Onset Food Allergies

What is a delayed onset food allergy? It is exactly what the name implies. The reaction is not always immediate, therefore it is delayed. This is a different immune reaction when compared to an immediate onset allergy (IgE) response which may result in anaphylaxis, hives and swelling. This type of reaction may be tested through IgA or IgG food allergy testing. The outward reaction may not appear for hours or days and can present as fatigue, ADHD, depression, insomnia, headaches, anxiety and other vague symptoms. Here is a list of the top 10 common offenders:

1. Cow’s milk

2. Gluten grains (found in wheat, rye, barley, oats, Kamut, spelt, and triticale)

3. Gluten (gliadin – found in whaet, rye, and barley, but not oats)

4. Yeast (both baker’s and brewer’s yeast)

5. Egg whites – children are most affected

6. Cashew nuts

7. Egg yolk – older adults are most affected

8. Soybeans

9. Nightshade vegetables (peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, onions)

10. Peanuts
